No Change, No Growth, No Life

“If we don’t change, we don’t grow. If we don’t grow, we are not really living. Growth demands a temporary surrender of security.” ~ Gail Sheehy

You are looking at your life and see that things are not quite the way you hoped or wanted them to be. Your finances are, well, not enough. Your job is not what you really wanted; not even related to your schooling. You feel stuck; like you just keep spinning your wheels doing the same things over and over again. You could even say that you have read all the self-help books that you could put your hands on and nothing happened.

Others would say the reason that their lives are the way they are is because of outside circumstances and factors. Like: I had kids… I got married… I got married to the wrong person… My parents did teach me… Well, if I had just a little more money… There is too much competition out there/at my job… My boss does not like me… My co-workers don’t respect me… The list can go on and on. I know because I’ve said some of these same things. It’s nauseating, and makes you want to do absolutely nothing but crawl in bed under those blankets and covers, hoping that somehow, some way your lack-luster life will just go away like magic.

But continuing on for a moment, many people will turn inward and berate themselves as well. We have all heard, maybe even said, some of the things that people will say about themselves. I’m not good enough… I’m stupid… I’m too old… Who do I think I am to be worthy… I don’t deserve to be happy… etc. The self loathing can run so deep that you can’t even accept a simple compliment.

These things are said so much that, at times, you even get sick of saying/hearing them. It is in that moment of being tired of saying and thinking these negative thoughts and words; of being tired of that stuck feeling and making excuses for it that you can affect change. It only takes a moment. Sure a little vulnerability and ton of courage are needed, maybe some help too, but just as you have all that self-loathing inside of you, there is a part that is yearning to get out and say, “I can do this!”

When you begin to have that yearning is the time to let go and let some growth happen. It’s not easy, it might even hurt a little, but when you let the growth take place in your life, an amazing thing starts to happen, you start living! You begin to see that you are more than what you thought and/or were taught. It is in this time, if you release all that you have been holding on to that has kept you in your current situation, that you can begin to embrace your change.

As well, it is in this time of change that if you start to bring people and things in your life that will help to support you, that you can grow even more. Take courage; you can do this. The old things that you once held onto, your old crutches, are no longer of any use to you. Reaching out to others you see that are in the place you want to be and letting yourself be vulnerable and asking for help; it is like fertilizer for your new growth.

It is only through staying in your comfort zone, and holding on to what is thought to provide some sense of security that you stagnate your growth. Letting go of those things, and reassessing where you currently are and what tools you currently have that you being to see you can do this. You will also see that it’s not as hard as you think.

Do you know if there is a good book to study cases? I enjoy reading your posts, William

A search on google or amazon will produce a wealth of information for books on self-improvement. I have personally read books by Dr. Wayne Dyer, Terry Cole-Whittaker and Rick Carson, just to name a few.
